Resumen de A Raisin in the Sun

"A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry is a seminal play first produced in 1959 that explores themes of race, identity, and socio-economic struggle in mid-20th century America. Set in a small, cramped apartment on Chicago's South Side, the story revolves around the Younger family as they grapple with their dreams and aspirations in the face of systemic racial oppression and personal conflict. The primary protagonists include Lena Younger (Mama), who seeks to use a $10,000 insurance check to secure a better future for her family; her son Walter Lee Younger, who dreams of investing in a liquor store to achieve financial independence; and Beneatha, Walter's sister, who aspires to become a doctor while exploring her African heritage. The play's title refers to a line from Langston Hughes’ poem "Harlem," which ponders what happens to a dream deferred—a recurring motif in Hansberry's narrative as each character navigates their own ambitions amid societal obstacles. The Younger family's aspirations clash with the realities of racial discrimination, particularly when they intend to move into a predominantly white neighborhood. This conflict is manifested through the character of Karl Lindner, a representative of the neighborhood's white residents, who offers to buy them out of their new home in an attempt to maintain racial segregation. Through its exploration of dreams and the personal sacrifices each character makes, "A Raisin in the Sun" highlights the intersection of race, gender, and class, laying bare the frustrations and hopes of African Americans during a time of significant social change. With its powerful narrative and complex characters, Hansberry's work remains a critical examination of the American Dream and its accessibility to marginalized communities.
