Resumen de A Monster Calls

Patrick Ness’s acclaimed novel, "A Monster Calls," is a powerful and poignant narrative centered on twelve-year-old Conor O’Malley, who is grappling with the impending loss of his terminally ill mother. Set in modern-day England, Conor's life is a constant struggle, marked by bullying at school, a distant father, and a stern grandmother, all while he confronts the unbearable truth of his mother's worsening cancer. The book’s distinctive framework unfolds with the appearance of a monstrous figure from an ancient yew tree in Conor's backyard, precisely at 12:07 AM. This isn't a comforting fairy-tale entity, but a formidable, ancient being with a specific demand: it will tell Conor three stories, and in return, Conor must recount his own "fourth story," his deepest truth. These tales are not simple moral fables; they are morally ambiguous and challenging, forcing Conor to confront the messy complexities of human nature, justice, and the often-unforeseen consequences of actions, directly reflecting his own internal turmoil and his struggle to make sense of his overwhelming grief, anger, and guilt. Conor’s journey involves navigating his daily life—avoiding bullies, attempting to maintain normalcy for his mother, and enduring the strained atmosphere at his grandmother’s house—while simultaneously engaging with the monster's profound and unsettling narratives. The novel masterfully explores themes of denial, truth, courage, and the multifaceted nature of loss, illustrating how imagination and storytelling can be a means to confront the unbearable. Integral to the book’s impact are Jim Kay’s striking, expressionistic illustrations, which are woven throughout the text, visually augmenting Conor's emotional landscape and the monster's imposing presence, creating an immersive and unique reading experience originally conceived by the late author Siobhan Dowd.
