《A Civil Campaign》摘要

"A Civil Campaign" by Lois McMaster Bujold is a science fiction novel set in the Vorkosigan Saga, focusing on themes of love, responsibility, and the complexities of courtship within a socio-political framework. The story takes place on the planet Barrayar, where aristocratic customs and familial duty weigh heavily on the main characters. The protagonist, Miles Vorkosigan, who is known for his resourcefulness and cunning, navigates the challenging landscape of both romantic and political alliances as he seeks to win the hand of his love interest, Ekaterin Vorsoisson. The novel centers around the concept of a "civil campaign"—a term that describes the careful and strategic maneuvering involved in courtship, reminiscent of a political campaign. Bujold utilizes sharp wit and humor to explore the intricacies of relationships and the potential pitfalls of miscommunication. The book also engages in a deeper examination of personal flaws and societal expectations, as Miles contends not only with pursuing Ekaterin but also with addressing the consequences of his previous actions, including the impact they have had on those around him. In this installment, Bujold incorporates experiments in social interaction, such as strategic gifting and the orchestration of social events, to illustrate how personal choices can intertwine with broader social dynamics. Additionally, the story introduces a subplot involving an unexpected crisis related to a genetically engineered "bioweapon," which further complicates Miles’ romantic pursuits. Overall, "A Civil Campaign" balances humor and warmth while delving into the complexities of love and duty in the context of interstellar society.
