Résumé de A child called "it"

"A Child Called "It"" by David J. Pelzer is a harrowing autobiographical account detailing the extreme child abuse he endured at the hands of his mother, Catherine Roerva Pelzer, from approximately age four until age twelve. Set in Daly City, California, during the 1970s, the memoir chronicles Pelzer's shocking early childhood, marked by his mother's transformation from a seemingly loving parent to a cruel and sadistic tormentor. The book's evocative title directly reflects his mother's practice of dehumanizing him, often referring to him as "the Boy" or "it," effectively stripping him of his personal identity and isolating him within his own home. Pelzer provides a stark and unvarnished narrative detailing years of calculated physical and psychological maltreatment. This included prolonged periods of starvation, brutal beatings, forced consumption of inedible or repulsive substances, and extreme emotional manipulation. He recounts how his mother devised a series of elaborate "games" and punishments, often with his father present but passively uninvolved, designed to break his spirit and ensure his complete submission. These experiences define the distinctive framework of the book, focusing on the sheer ingenuity of a child's survival mechanisms against sustained, targeted cruelty. The narrative vividly portrays young David's desperate struggle for self-preservation, highlighting his extraordinary resilience, resourcefulness, and the mental fortitude he developed to endure unimaginable suffering. "A Child Called "It"" focuses solely on this period of intense abuse and culminates with the crucial intervention of school authorities and Child Protective Services, which ultimately led to David's removal from his abusive household at the age of twelve. The book stands as the powerful first installment in Pelzer's trilogy of memoirs, offering a profound testament to the human capacity for survival amidst the darkest of circumstances.
