ملخص A Brief History of Neoliberalism

In "A Brief History of Neoliberalism," David Harvey provides a critical examination of the rise and implications of neoliberalism as a dominant economic and political ideology since the late 20th century. Harvey situates neoliberalism within a historical context, tracing its origins to the economic crises of the 1970s, particularly the oil crisis and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. He argues that neoliberalism emerged as a response to these challenges, championed by key figures such as Milton Friedman and politicians like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, who promoted deregulation, privatization, and the reduction of state intervention in the economy. Harvey articulates how neoliberalism reshaped global capitalism through specific frameworks, emphasizing the commodification of various aspects of life, including public services and social goods. He discusses the notion of "accumulation by dispossession," which describes the processes by which wealth is transferred from the public domain to private interests, leading to growing inequalities. Each chapter delves into different dimensions of neoliberal practice, including its impact on urban environments, labor markets, and social relations. Additionally, he critiques the ideological foundations of neoliberalism, arguing that it is not simply an economic model but a comprehensive social and cultural project aimed at restructuring society. Harvey explores the political implications of neoliberalism, including its influence on democratic processes and its relationship with crises, such as the 2008 financial collapse. Through empirical case studies and theoretical insights, "A Brief History of Neoliberalism" provides a thought-provoking analysis of how neoliberal policies have reshaped societies worldwide and the ongoing consequences of this transformation.
